WHO WE ARE The Department of Ophthalmology located in brand-new accomodation within the University of Aberdeen's Institute of Medical Sciences on the Foresterhill site was founded 20 years ago from charitable donations. From small beginnings, it has developed into the leading eye research organisation in Scotland and has a worldwide reputation. Its work is based on many programmes of research into common blinding diseases. The work is carried out by a 30-strong research group headed by Professor John V. Forrester. The team includes several eye surgeons and basic science researchers whose energies are focused into discovering causes of blindness. The effort is essential before effective treatments can be developed. Our results are important for everyone in developed and developing countries alike. Saving Sight in Grampian is a charity set up by former solicitor Iain Fraser specifically to support the work done by Professor Forrester and the opthalmology department, aims to secure the future of the department and ensure its work continues. Saving Sight in Grampian, which Mr Fraser set up in 1989 is the funding backbone of the department. Every penny raised by the charity goes to the department. Administrative costs are paid for out of Mr Fraser's pocket and no one is paid expenses. Since the charity was establised, it has raised £1.1 million. At least another £1 million is needed to carry on the work and pay for researchers and essential new equipment.
